Protect That Baby with Baby Armour

Knowing that I have said I don't often make baby things, I seem to have quite a few baby patterns. One of the reasons for that is I volunteer in a prison and the guys and I crochet baby items to be donated and I use the Basic Baby Beanie, No Sew Baby Booties, and this Baby Armour Vest pattern for this purpose.

The baby armour will keep the cold out, make baby will look fabulous and modern. It is made from half double crochet rib to give a chunky and strong look.

You can make more than one, choose your favourite colour combinations, team colours, or just something funky. Match with the no sew baby booties and a citrus, berry or basic hat in the colours of your choice to make a matching set that will make baby stand out from the crowd.

What You Will Need:

2 balls double knit (8 ply) weight yarn colour of your choice

1 ball double knit (8 ply) weight yarn in a contrasting colour

5 mm crochet hook

Tapestry needle (to weave in ends)

Sizes:

0 - 9 months (short)

0 - 9 months (long) in parenthesis

The vest is worked in two pieces then joined.

Special Stitches:

fhdc (foundation half double)

crochet blo (back loop only)

The Vest:

Back Panel:

To begin ch 37 (41), or fhdc 35 (39). If you use fhdc then omit row 1, ch 1 and turn

Row 1: hdc into 3rd ch from hook (counts as 2 hdc) and hdc in all remaining ch, ch 1 and turn (35 or 39 hdc)

Row 2 - 16: blo hdc in all hdc across, ch 1 and turn (35 or 39 hdc)

Row 17: blo hdc in all hdc across (35 or 39 hdc)

Fasten off and weave in ends

Front Panel:

To begin ch 37 (41), or fhdc 35 (39). If you use fhdc then omit row 1, ch 1 and turn

Row 2 - 4: blo hdc in all hdc across, ch 1 and turn (35 or 39 hdc)

Row 5: blo hdc in next 26 (30) hdc. Leave remaining hdc unworked, ch 1 and turn (26 or 30 hdc)

Row 6 - 12: blo hdc in next 26 (30) hdc, ch 1 and turn (26 or 30 hdc)

Row 13: blo hdc in next 26 (30) hdc, ch 11 and turn (26 or 30 hdc and 11 ch)

Row 14: hdc in 3rd ch from hook (counts as 2 hdc) hdc in next 7 ch, blo hdc in each hdc, ch 1 and turn (35 or 39 hdc)

Row 15 & 16: blo hdc in all hdc across, ch 1 and turn (35 or 39 hdc)

Row 17: blo hdc in all hdc across (35 or 39 hdc)

Fasten off and weave in ends

Joining:

Join seams across the shoulders with a blo slst or sew with a whip stitchJoin side seams with a blo slst or sew with a whip stitch, leaving a 12 hdc gap for the arms

Fasten off and weave in ends

Edging:

Join at any stitch along the bottom edge with a slst, ch 1, sc evenly around the bottom edge, join with slst in first sc.

Fasten off and weave in ends

Join at any stitch along the neck edge with a slst, ch 1, sc evenly across the back and side of the neck and hdc evenly across the front of the neck, join with slst in first sc.

Fasten off and weave in ends

Join at any stitch along the arm space with a slst, ch 1, sc evenly around the arm space, join with slst in first sc. Repeat for second arm space

Fasten off and weave in ends
