Shell Hat

A comfortable beanie made with shell stitches to give it something different to ordinary beanie hats. Make in any colour you like, why not make more than one and have one to match every outfit? Fits most head sizes, for a larger head or looser fit use a chunkier yarn and a larger hook. It is worked in the round. I used 4 seasons Pure Wool 8ply, but any 8ply yarn will work with this pattern.

Difficulty and Terminology: This is an easy pattern and uses US terminology.

What You Will Need: 2 balls of double knit (8 ply) weight yarn 5mm crochet hook (for a snug fit) 5.5mm crochet hook (for a looser slouchy fit) Tapestry needle (to weave in ends)

Tension:

14 sts/8 rounds = 10cm/4 inches square in dc turning/without turning at the end of each round

Sizing: The hat has a circumference of about 58cm and about 21cm from tip to brim. Abbreviations: ch - chain sc - single crochet

dc - double crochet

slst - slip stitch

The Hat: Round 1: ch4, 11 dc into 1st chain, join with sl st in 4th chain (12 dc) Round 2: ch 1, *sc in sl st, sk next dc shell (5 dc) in next dc, sk next dc* Repeat from * to *. Join with sl st in sc. (3 shells) Round 3: ch3 (counts as dc),dc in first dc,2dcinnextdc(dcinnext2st,2dcinnext st) repeat five times. Join with sl st in ch3 to turning ch. (24 dc) Round 4: Repeat round 2. (6 shells) Round 5: Repeat round 3. (48 dc) Round 6: Repeat round 2. (12 shells) Round 7: Ch 3, half shell (2dc) in sc, sk next 2 dc, sc in next dc (sk next 2 dc, shell in next sc, sk next 2 dc, sc in next dc) repeat till last three st, half shell into last st. Join with sl st in ch3 to turning ch. (11 shells, 2 half shells) Round 8: ch1,scinslst(sknext2dc,shellinnextst,sknext2dc,scinnextdc) repeat 12 times. Join with sl st in ch3 to turning ch. (12 shells) Round 9 – 18: Repeat rounds 7 – 8.
